This workshop combines a variety of techniques using nature’s bounty, photographs & photocopies, found objects and ephemeral materials.

You will learn the exciting & doable kitchen sink techniques of:

·      monoprinting from a ‘real’ gelatine plate

·      rusting and dying papers and fabrics

·      photocopy transfers and

·      printing onto paper and fabrics using the pasta machine method.

You will create four sample book forms:

1.     ‘A fat’ journal using multiple pamphlet stitch

2.     A concertina with hard covers

3.     A star book and

4.     A Turkish Map fold book.

You will play, explore, experiment and create, by combining techniques learnt in the workshop with your ‘brought from home items’ of photos, drawings, prints, collage papers, fabrics & found objects (natural and manufactured).  You will use a range of papers and fabrics to create a variety of surfaces, you will print, transfer, rust, collage and layer, attaching images, objects and adding text where desired.

Using photocopied images you will play with techniques and ideas for transferring these to add further layers to your work.

Methods of attaching materials will be explored and demonstrated. The use of ephemeral materials & preserve these within an artwork will be discussed.

Throughout the workshop, you will complete a number of ‘mini projects’, using the techniques learned.  The mini projects will provide you with the ‘know how’ for your major project of a Unique Artists’ Book.

Adventuring into Artists Books – Structures & surfaces is suitable for students who are new to the concept of Artist’s Books.  More experienced students are most welcome to attend if they are looking for new surface techniques, book forms or to simply indulge in five days of creating!
