SeedArtLab: Bio-cultural mapping through exploratory Art Practice
Sophie Munns
Journey into the world of seeds with artist Sophie Munns.
Designed for nature lovers of all experience levels, this workshop offers fresh prompts and inspiring ways of seeing and responding to this vital element of nature.
Participants will explore seed photography, ink mark-making and drawing, develop their own seed motifs through layered works on paper or cloth, use collage, print and stitching, and investigate bio-cultural mapping.
The week culminates in translating personal nature stories into concertina books or fabric pieces, finishing with a display of completed experiments and artworks.
All skill levels welcome!
Sophie Munns is a visual artist, educator and researcher whose interest in the relationship between landscape and culture began during her childhood in the NSW Northern Rivers.
Moves between rural and urban environments, in Australia and abroad, have continually shaped her perspective. A formative period in Greece during her time living in London highlighted a tension between exploring the past and seeking what is emerging beyond traditional art practice.
These interests later converged in a seed-focused project at the SeedLab, Brisbane Botanic Gardens, linking ancient cultural knowledge with contemporary seed conservation science. Since 2010, residencies and projects exploring bio-cultural diversity have informed her work, using seed diversity as a lens to investigate connections between people and place. The SeedArtLab project finds its fullest expression through teaching, public engagement and the creation of multifaceted visual artworks.
