Artistic Stitch

Alison Bogg

From a simple mark on a piece of cloth, to the creation of a mood, a story, an artistic idea; stitch can be a dynamic and versatile element of textile art.

Artistic Stitch is a workshop that focuses on textile surface design and stitch. Experimentation with hand stitching and mixed media using a diverse range of materials and techniques is explored to develop imaginative ideas for textile artwork.

Alison will share her own creative processes and guide you through a range of stitching and mixed media techniques, exercises, experimentation, and sample making. This includes combining different stitch types with dyes, inks, print, painting, photo/graphics, mark making, textile collage, applique, and sculptural/textural embellishment. The course will also look at various contemporary textile artists, cultural textiles and other influences that can further stimulate ideas.

Choosing the stitch and surface design combinations you prefer; you can then create your own piece. As you progress, there will be plenty of support wherever you need it – idea generation, creative flow, composition, and technical/practical/artistic considerations. Whether you a practising creative or new to this form of textile art, it is a great opportunity to build your own artistic approach.

Relax and enjoy meditative stitching, with support and stimulus to learn and explore creative possibilities for your textile art!

All skill levels welcome.

Alison Bogg is an Australian textile artist who has worked in the performing arts in areas of costume design, fabrication, and art finishing. She trained at NIDA (Design 1987) and has worked with various companies including Melbourne Theatre Company, Opera Australia, Sydney Olympics 2000, ABC & SBS.

Her experience in costume and her exploration of crossovers between wearable art, painting and sculpture, inform and inspire her studio practice. Her textile work is influenced by experimentations with surface design and use of different mediums and materials. Reflecting on the connections made between artist, artwork and audience is also important to her.

Shibori, dyeing and stitch elements are commonly seen in her artwork and often form a part of her workshops. These workshops are a central facet of Alison’s arts practice, kindled by her experience as a creative arts teacher in schools. Alison exhibits her work in regional NSW and the ACT, and her costume work is held in collections at The Powerhouse Museum and The National Museum of Australia.
