Shibori Snippets- Shibori Accessories with Natural Dyes
Catherine Moon
Shibori Snippets is a workshop in two parts.
First will be an exploration of the ability of silk to retain a memory of shape. Shibori techniques will be used to mould silk into jewellery, scarves and neckpieces. Colour will be developed using a variety of natural dyes such as madder, logwood, cochineal and walnut.
The second half of the workshop will be a focus on Iron and Tannic acid. Experimentation will be encouraged to produce bold shibori designs on both cotton and silk. Shibori design development using small amounts of fabrics and layering of colour will be discussed and demonstrated. Basic shibori techniques including Itajime (clamping), Arashi (pole wrapping), Stitching and Binding will be covered. More involved techniques will be introduced for participants with prior experience. Those with little or no knowledge of Shibori and/or Natural dyes , as well as the experienced, are welcome as the workshop will cater for all levels.
At the completion of the workshop participants will have more knowledge of shibori techniques, understand the sculptural possibilities of silk, how to layer colour in designs and how to dye fabrics with natural dyes. Come prepared to have fun and enjoy the processes involved in the creation of shibori accessories.
