Fearless Play – Fiber, Paper, Fabric, Jewellery, Basketry and More!

This workshop allows students to explore a variety of techniques to create new directions in Artwork or increase to their existing skillsets.
Mary will instruct on how to use these skills and techniques and incorporate them into Jewellery, Paper, Book Arts, Fabric, Art quilts, Mixed media, Collage, Sculpture and Basketry. This course is very individualized and will allow each student to take the techniques and materials offered to pursue their desired direction. Students will make finished art pieces, small projects and samples using the techniques.
Students will have access to a variety of materials including, sheet metals, screens, wires, nails, brads, beads, medium, linen string, fabric, papers, paints, wax and basketry materials. Mary will have a limited amount of these items to sell as needed for the workshop. There will be a material fee that covers the cost of sharing tools, torches, sharing materials for specific techniques and materials. Students may bring their own materials and focus on their specific interest. Found and recycled items would be perfect to incorporate into the projects, feel free to bring your stash. Surface design can be achieved by repetition, bringing multiples will create textures and patterns. Recycled and natural objects can include electronic salvage, hardware items, Pods, rocks, shells, sticks, and are usually free for the gathering.
We will explore many techniques, including metalsmithing, basketry, encaustic, surface embellishment, patinas, basketry techniques, surface burnout, wire-working and a variety of connections. This course is very individualized and will allow each student to take the techniques and materials offered to pursue their desired direction.
Mary will offer instruction, inspiration and a creative environment to be fearless in your learning, while feeling free to play and explore.

Mary Hettmansperger is the owner of Gallery 64. Mary teaches in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, UK and Singapore internationally. Across the US and at Arrowmont, Penland, Bead and Button, Convergence, National and Regional Fiber conferences, Art and Craft Schools, and private Guilds for 30 years. Mary has authored and illustrated 4 books Fabulous Woven jewelry, Wrap, Stitch, fold and Rivet, and Mixed metal Jewelry workshop, and Heat, Color, Set and Fire, all published by Lark/Sterling. She has also produced 3 DVD’s for Interweave on surface design and jewelry. Other books include, Jewelry Design Challenge, 500 Baskets, Fiber Arts Design Book 7, the Gourd Book, Creative Scarecrows, Pushing the envelope, Fabulous Found object jewelry, Teapots - makers and collectors, Beading with Crystals, and Creative Beading Volume 2. Mary has had work exhibited at SOFA – through the Katie Gingrass Gallery. She does segments for the PBS programming – Create, Beads Baubles and jewels and Quilting Art and has had her work published in many magazines, including, Quilting Arts, Art jewelry, Bead and Button, Beadwork, Shuttle Spindle and dye pot, and Crafts Report.
