Sculptural Felts - Form, Composition, Texture and Movement in the 3rd Dimension

This exciting workshop is ALL about exploring the sculptural possibilities in handmade felt.

Using wool and other natural fibres in combination with wire, foam, multiple resists, and mixed media, you will learn a variety of innovative felting techniques to create abstract forms, quirky figurines, and refined vessels in handmade felt. Guided by the tutor’s knowledge and skills, comprehensive demonstrations, and in a supportive environment, the focus is on design and exploration, creating form and textural effects with creative abandon! This workshop is suited to all levels of experience - students are encouraged to sample, pursue their individual interest, and finish a range of works to a high standard. A class full of creative adventures, and serious fun.

Martien van Zuilen (born The Netherlands, 1962) is a fibre artist widely recognised for her work in the medium of handmade felt.

Since the late 1980s, she exhibits her distinctive artworks nationally and internationally. Martien is also one of Australia’s leading felting tutors with an extensive teaching portfolio of national and international workshops at all levels of experience, across a broad range of topics.

She is passionate about the role of the arts in community and counts herself lucky to be able to inspire others about the ‘magic’ of Felt in all its forms. Based in Perth, WA, Martien completed her PhD in Anthropology and Material Culture in 2013. She has a full-time studio practice which she combines with her roles as Convenor of Fibres West Inc.(2013-current), editor of Australia’s national magazine FELT (2016-2023) and free-lance curatorial work. Her artwork is included in numerous international publications, books, and specialist arts magazines.
