Botanical Leather

Penny Jewell

It is surprisingly easy to create beautiful botanical prints on leather. The secrets to success are correct mordant recipes, combined with the right choice of leather plus careful attention to processing temperature.

In this course participants will try several mordants plus different ways to change background colours using tannins and dye blankets.

The printed leathers will be able to be sewn on a domestic sewing machine and can be used for journal covers, bags or shoes. We will not be making shoes in the class but I will give you the contacts for an expert shoemaker in Java who I use to make my shoes, an inexpensive and good way to personalise your wardrobe.

Students who have no prior experience of botanical printing will be able to successfully do this workshop, but of course those who have experience of the process on fabric will find such knowledge helpful.

All skill levels welcome!
