Zap Zing Zowie

Rachael Daisy Dodd

Welcome to the world of folded fabric artistry with Zap Zing Zowie - where fabric and imagination collide to create breathtaking works of art!

In this workshop, you'll explore the exciting techniques of folded fabric “Whizz Bang” quilting and discover how to transform simple fabric into awe-inspiring textured circles and patterns. We’ll start the week off by diving deep into the art of kaleidoscopic circles and layered patterns using folded triangles in a variety of ways. Along the way we will assess individual participants aims and create plans for their quilt or project, and then work on the elements required.

At the end of the week, you'll have created a beautiful wall hanging quilt top or have a solid plan to finish your project, that is a reflection of your individual creativity and style. And beyond that, you'll take away a newfound appreciation for the art of folded fabric quilting, along with the skills to continue exploring your own artistic vision.

Wonderfully versatile, these techniques are great for beginners through to experienced sewers who would like to try something fun and different. They can be adapted for garment making and can incorporate felt or paper. The quilts are primarily sewn with a sewing machine, but can also be sewn by hand for people who prefer to sew that way.

There will be lots of quilts on hand as examples. Students may be inspired by my Zap Zing Zowie triptych or any of my many Whizz Bang style quilts, or you can even bring your own out-of-the-box ideas and have guidance on how to make your vision a reality.

During the workshop, participants will learn different ways to make circles using folded triangles, the magical joy of making a ‘Whizz Bang’ circle, to look at fabric and colour in a different way, piecing and layering with triangles, clever machine Applique tricks, big stitch hand quilting, and improve piecing.

A lifelong interest in colour and design led Rachaeldaisy Dodd to delve into various crafts as a child, then on to work as a creative florist for 20 years.

She discovered patchwork and quilting in the early 2000’s, and that was it, she was hooked! Since then, Rachaeldaisy Dodd has become synonymous with bold, colourful, eye popping quilts. Whilst honouring the tradition of quilting she continues to find fresh ways and new techniques to interpret conventional designs. Her use of 3D elements such as folded and gathered fabric techniques, Yo-Yo puffs, prairie points, wool felt, appliqued and pieced denim come together to create beautifully, unique textured work.

Rachaeldaisy’s fresh interpretation of the art of quilting has seen her quilts awarded many prizes including awards for Best in Show at both the 2015 and 2016 Australian Modern Quilt Show, Best in Show & Best in NSW at the 2016 Sydney Quilt Show. Most Innovative at 2017 Dare to Differ Contemporary Textiles Exhibition, Houston Quilt Show 2018, 2017 Best Use of Colour Sydney Quilt Show and Viewers Choice Awards.

Rachaeldaisy’s quilts have been exhibited in quilt shows and galleries and featured in many publications both nationally and internationally. She has a book called Whizz Bang! Adventures in Folded Fabric published with Quiltmania that focuses on the techniques that create her award winning folded fabric quilts.
