Exploring Colour, Pattern + 3D Embellishments

Jessica Grady

In this workshop we will explore and experiment with mixed media materials, colour and pattern to create exciting 3D hand stitched textiles and sculptures.

We will begin the week looking at the first step of transforming materials such as the humble washer, old bubblewrap, recycled fabrics and packaging and turning these into exciting embellishments using processes with paint, heat and material manipulation. Jessica will introduce you to her way of thinking of the potential of materials and how they can be given a new lease of life with a sprinkle of creativity!

Sampling on fabric will start to give you ideas for taking your hand stitch and allowing it to create structure with newly transformed embellishments - stitching upwards to construct fun, 3D forms, trying vertical beading, pleated and folded sequins, loops and tassels! Sampling is a great way to try multiple techniques to discover what works best for you, to put forward into your final project and sculpture idea. There are several ways you can choose to make a final 3D stitched sculpture, and Jessica will help you to explore that throughout the workshops. Students are all encouraged to bring along whatever odds and ends and unusual materials they can find at home, that they want to include in their samples and sculptures. The workshop itself is suitable for all abilities!
